Meet & Geek: Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs)
May 23rd 5:30-7:30 p.m.
Bill Buratto, CEO and President of Ventura County Economic Development Association (VCEDA) will give us an overview on the history, bring us up to speed with the current technology and describe how Ventura County is leading the way by applying to be one of six first test sites to explore this technology.
An UAV (unmanned aerial vehicle) is an aircraft without a human pilot on board. Its flight is controlled either autonomously by computers in the vehicle, or under the remote control of a pilot on the ground or in another vehicle. There are a wide variety of drone shapes, sizes, configurations, and characteristics. UAVs currently are most know for military purposes, however commercial applications are being explored for this technology that’s we come in.
“It is somewhat unclear what the site’s economic impact will be because the commercialization of drones is an industry that technically doesn’t exist yet.”–Bill Buratto
In South Africa UAVs are used to stop Rhino poachers, in Japan to view damage of nuclear power plant after the 2011 tsunami and in Belgium to record biodiversity of species in the Flemish Terrain.
How can you see the technology applied to help business, individuals, nature and our community? Let’s explore ideas.
Meet & Geek is aimed to attract entrepreneurs, inventors, tech leaders and free creative thinkers to be on the cutting edge of the economy in Ventura County and create creative practical feedback and ideas for solving problems. Other topics will include things like 3D printing, Google Glass, Virtual Reality.

Jodi Womack loves bringing large groups of women together. Women who mean business! Jodi created No More Nylons to help business owners figure out all the “do-it-yourself” tools available to promote their own businesses. Her natural leadership is evident in the way she pulled her own community together during the economic slide of 2009. Watching talented entrepreneurs struggle to stay afloat, Jodi invited women business owners to join together once a month to combine resources, share ideas and become empowered to stimulate their own economy. The result has been tremendous; jobs have been created, services exchanged and hope renewed.
Jodi created No More Nylons, the company that hosts these Women’s Business Socials to bring women in business together to have vibrant and meaningful connections in person and online. She also co-founded The Womack Company, an international workplace performance training firm with her husband, Jason in 2007. Her firsthand experience in business management, marketing, and customer service shines through their training and coaching firm. Jodi delivers innovative ideas with integrity and an authentic desire to see everyone succeed. Jodi turns “best possible scenarios” into everyday success.
